Wet Method Install – Wheel Blackout Decal Kits

To install our wheel blackout overlays, using the wet method, follow these simple steps. (click here to order)

First – In a spray bottle, mix 16 ounces of water with a quarter teaspoon of Liquid Dawn or an equivalent product.  For a small spray bottle, a drop or two is often enough soap.

Second – Peel the decal off of the wax paper release liner and spray the adhesive side and the wheel with the soapy water solution.  Be careful not to get the paper wet.

Third – Apply the decal to your wheel and slide it into place.  Once it is in position, anchor it with one hand, and gently press out the liquid with your fingers or a cloth covered plastic squeegee.Fourth – Use a hair dryer to heat the vinyl so it is more pliable.  Heat lightly at first and dab away any moisture with a soft cloth. This will press out more liquid and allow the edges to bond better to the wheel and on full coverage kits.  It will also let the vinyl bend over the edges and stick.  Remember, heat lightly, then dab with a soft cloth, and repeat.  As the liquid evaporates, you can press harder and go from side to side with a cloth or cloth covered squeegee.hair dryer decal installFifth – If there are any air bubbles in the decal, they will disappear over time, or you can use a fine needle to pierce the surface and release the air.

NOTE – please allow the decals to dry and stick to the wheel very well before driving the car.  Heat from the hair dryer helps this process.

Dry Method Install – Wheel Blackout Decal Kits

Many decal kits can be installed dry with no application fluid or soapy water. Applying dry is quick and easy with no dry time needed.   Just peel and press on.

Dry apply decals are normally smaller and have no thin parts that can be stretched or deformed during an install. They can be pulled up and reapplied multiple times.  Our Telluride decals above are an example.  The mainZ challenge in applying is to center the decal so that is looks right on the wheel.  As you apply, this becomes easier.

Before installing, wash your wheels and wipe down the application areas with isopropyl alcohol.  This removes any residue that may prevent adhesion.  When applied to a clean surface, the decals will last longer.

For dry applied decals, simply peel the sticker from the release liner (wax paper) and apply directly to your wheel. Make sure your fingers are clean to avoid contaminating the adhesive. If the decal is off center, gently peel it off and reapply.  You can do this several times without hurting the decal.  This process becomes easier with practice.  Once it is in the proper position, press the decal in well with a soft cloth.

Save your spare decals in a cool, dry place.

Wheel Overlay Installation Video

The following video outlines a simple method for installing wheel decals using the wet method.  As described in our installation article, the soapy water you will use should be no stronger than one quarter teaspoon of Liquid Dawn per 16 ounces of water.  For a small spray bottle, often just a drop will do it.  Be careful not to use too much soap. Full Blackout Wheel Overlay Versus Kits With Reveal

At iCutDecals, we design and create two types of wheel blackout overlay kits.  A full blackout that covers the entire silver section of the wheel, and a partial blackout kit that leaves a silver edge or reveal around the decals.  Both kits are durable and applied the same way.  The one you choose is simply a matter of taste and preference. Also, keep in mind that we offer these kits in several colors besides black. (click here to order)

The photo above is of our full coverage blackout overlay kit.  One for the Honda Civic Sport, and the other for the Honda Passport.  As you can see, there is no reveal, and the kit essentially blacks out the entire rim.

The photos below are of wheel blackout kits with reveal.  The first is our 4Runner kit, and the second is our Kia Telluride kit. Note the area around the decal and how it leaves some silver.  Many of our customers prefer this look in that it adds style to a wheel versus simply blacking it completely out.  These are especially nice when done in colors.
